Achievement Week 2008, continued
With so many people doing extraordinary things in the city, the Achievement Week Committee recognized Michael Coard as the 2008 Citizen of the Year for his unwavering commitment to the African American community. A criminal defense attorney and community activist, Michael is a founding member of Avenging The Ancestors Coalition (ATAC). ATAC is the organization that helped lead the historic and successful battle in forcing the federal government to commemorate the nine African descendents enslaved by President George Washington at America’s first “White House,” which was located at the current site of the new Liberty Bell Center. Michael also challenged those in attendance to be aware of past and present injustices as we move forward in the changing face of American society.
New to the Achievement Week program is the Founders Stand-In recognition. This award pays homage to those stalwart brothers who remain dedicated to the true intentions and spirit of the Fraternity’s four Founding Fathers. The Mu Omega brothers who received this honor were: Brother George Lee for Founder Bishop Edgar A. Love, Brother Harold Miller for Founder Dr. Oscar J. Cooper, Brother Gladstone Booth for Founder Professor Frank Coleman, and Brother Dr. Floyd Baker for Founder Dr. Ernest E. Just.
Another addition to the program is the Four Cardinal Principle Award. This award goes to those brothers who have proven themselves worthy by holding firm to the ideals of manhood, scholarship, perseverance, and uplift. The Mu Omega brothers who received this honor were: Brother Robert Manning for Manhood, Brother Darryl Blackwell for Scholarship, Brother Kenneth Jackson for Perseverance, and Brother William Smith for Uplift. The Penn Area Neighborhood Association (PANA) Award was given to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Queen. The final award presented was that of Mu Omega Chapter’s “Omega Man of the Year.” This honor was bestowed upon Brother Steven C. Oakman. Brother Oakman has been a major force within the chapter for many years, and yet he graciously gave accolades to various brothers with whom he respects. In customary fashion, the brothers in attendance rose to their feet and sung the Fraternity hymn, “Omega Dear,” to end the evening on a mighty note.
