Achievement Week 2008
The brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., “Mighty” Mu Omega Chapter in Philadelphia recently held their 2008 Achievement Week observance at the Mandell Theater on the campus of Drexel University. The program took place on November 30, 2008 and was the culmination of several days of uplifting activities in the surrounding community. Under the leadership of the Achievement Week Committee Chairman, Brother James Mock, the committee brought new vigor to the mandated program set aside to seek out and give due recognition to individuals who have made a noteworthy contribution toward improving the quality of life for African Americans.

This year’s Achievement Week activities began on November 24, 2008 at the Morrison Elementary School where the committee rewarded a fourth grade class with a certificate for best attendance in the month of October. With many Mu Omega Chapter brothers in attendance, the lucky fourth graders were treated to a pizza party along with delicious Rita’s Water Ice. The following day the committee gave the same treat to a fifth grade class at the Carnell Elementary School for their exemplary attendance in the month of October.
With this year’s Achievement Week theme being, “Three Looks – One Focus: Family, Fraternity, and Friendship,” Brother Mock did not have to look far for a keynote speaker who could eloquently expound on this particular subject matter. Brother Mock and his committee unanimously chose Brother John M. Younge to give the keynote address at the Achievement Week Program. A distinguished member of Mu Omega Chapter, Brother Younge serves as a judge on the Court of Common Pleas. Being raised in the southwest section of Philadelphia and graduating from Central High School in 1973, Brother Younge received a firm foundation in the city’s public school system. Brother Younge soon after earned a degree in Business Administration from Boston University in 1977 and in 1981, he received his Juris Doctor Degree from the Howard University School of Law. Challenging the audience to keep their lives in perspective, Brother Younge emphasized the need to give back to the community no matter how small the deed.
